Netflix Sets Release Date For Issa Rae Rom-Com 'The Lovebirds'

Netflix has announced the release date for The Lovebirds. The streaming giant picked up the Paramount Pictures rom-com starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani after its SXSW premiere was canceled and its theatrical release date was pulled.

The deal makes sense, given Paramount’s history with Netflix. The studio dropped off Julius Onah’s The Cloverfield Paradoxwhich starred David Oyelowo, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Elizabeth Debicki, on the streaming service as a surprise release after the 2018 Super Bowl. The streaming giant also had international rights for several Paramount films, including Annihilation starring Natalie Portman and Tessa Thompson.

Michael Showalter, who directed Nanjiani in The Big Sick, directed The Lovebirds. Aaron Abrams and Brendan Gall wrote the screenplay.

The official description: A couple (Rae & Nanjiani) experiences a defining moment in their relationship when they are unintentionally embroiled in a murder mystery. As their journey to clear their names takes them from one extreme–and hilarious–circumstance to the next, they must figure out how they, and their relationship, can survive the night.

The film will land on Netflix on May 22.
