An adaptation of the recent, acclaimed Broadway play American Son seemed inevitable at some point, and now, it looks like we’ll get it much sooner than we thought.

Netflix has picked up the Kerry Washington-led and produced play to adapt. Washington revealed the news Monday night on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, describing the project as a “movie-play hybrid.”

Washington will return to star and produce, and Kenny Leon will return to direct and produce. Steven Pasquale, Jeremy Jordan, and Eugene Lee will also reprise their roles.

The play, which explores the intersection of systemic racism and law enforcement in America, sees Washington portray Kendra Ellis-Connor, the mother of a missing child who joins forces with the boy’s father (Pasquale) at a Florida police station to get answers.

In American Son, Washington’s character tries to cope with and determine the circumstances surrounding her son’s disappearance when his car is found during a traffic stop.

Production on the Netflix adaptation will begin in February.

Washington is currently set to star in and produce two Hulu series: Little Fires Everywhere and Old City BluesShe also executive produces Facebook Watch’s Five Points.
