New Moon, the animated short film co-written and co-produced by Colman Domingo, has earned a place on the Oscars shortlist.

Domingo tweeted about the news on Twitter Wednesday, writing, “With tears in my eyes, we are proud to share that our short animation NEW MOON has made the OSCARS SHORTLIST.”

The film, directed by Colman’s husband Raúl Domingo with Jérémie Balais and Jeff Leffig, is written by both Colman and Raul. The film is based on Colman’s play, A Boy and His Soul and is produced by the Domingos’ company Edith Productions.

Narrated by Colman, New Moon focuses on a young boy with his mother who sit on their porch in West Philadelphia and chat about their dreams and hopes under the light of the new moon.

They said of the project according to Deadline, “New Moon is a short film dedicated to Black mothers and sons and the love that keeps them both inspired through immeasurable hardships. Laurie Lathem, writer and educator, sparked our interest in the power of animation, as she encouraged Colman’s solo play A Boy and His Soul to be developed into an animated work.”

“We went down the rabbit hole of the peculiar yet satisfying journey of adapting a short piece of text into a full-blown experience of animated storytelling, while maintaining its origins of the theater,” they continued. “We had no idea what we were creating or how to really do it. We just knew that we found partners who wanted to put a beautiful message out into the world that is basically about the love of mothers, Black boys, dreams and the power of Aretha Franklin. We are beyond thrilled to share New Moon with the world.”

Domingo is starring in several upcoming projects next year. As has previously been reported, he is starring in the musical adaptation of The Color Purple. But he is also starring in the upcoming Netflix film Rustin, the biopic of prominent civil rights architect and right-hand to Martin Luther King, Jr., Bayard Rustin.

Recently, Domingo has had starring roles in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Candyman, and signed a first-look deal with AMC Studios.
