Nia DaCosta will write and direct a film adaptation of Hedda Gabler, a reworking of Henrik Ibsen’s play. The film comes from MGM’s Orion Pictures and Brad Pitt’s Plan B.
DaCosta will give an original interpretation of the work, which has been announced before her impending Marvel Cinematic Universe debut with 'The Marvels.'
As Variety notes in their report, since its debut in 1891, Hedda Gabler has been adapted for theater and television and in many different languages. Glenda Jackson received an Academy Award nomination for best actress for the 1975 adaption, Hedda.
Hedda Gabler follows its eponymous character as she “navigates a house she does not want, a marriage she feels trapped in and an ex-lover who has reappeared in her life.”
The film is produced by Plan B and Gabrielle Nadig, who also produced DaCosta’s breakthrough movie, Little Woods.
The movie represents DaCosta's most recent partnership with MGM and Plan B.
In April, DaCosta agreed to direct the feature film version of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ best-selling book The Water Dancer with Plan B producing. Last year, DaCosta co-wrote the horror film Candyman with Jordan Peele and directed it for MGM.
Candyman made DaCosta the first Black woman to have a film debut at the top of the U.S. box office charts. It earned a total of $77 million worldwide.
