Lakeith Stanfield has been tapped to star in an adaptation of Kwame Onwuachi’s Notes From a Young Black Chef.
McKinnon will adapt the text for the big screen and A24 will finance the pic. According to Variety, who broke the news of the film’s development: The story follows Onwuachi’s unprecedented journey from childhood in the Bronx with a mostly single mother to opening a fine-dining restaurant in Washington D.C. at the age of 26. The story encompasses the extreme highs and lows of his path to becoming a chef in a mostly white, elitist industry, including financing his first catering business by selling candy on the subway, appearing on “Top Chef,” and his first restaurant, Shaw Bijou in D.C., closing just 11 weeks after its opening.
Onuwuachi recently won the 2019 James Beard award for Rising Chef of the Year.
Atlanta star Stanfield, one of the busiest stars in Hollywood right now, has two films coming out this year, Lionsgate’s Knives Out and A24’s Uncut Gems. He also recently finished filming Stella Meghie’s The Photograph with Issa Rae.
No director for the film has been announced as of yet.
