We first reported in 2014 that the project was in the works from NYC-based filmmaker, Easmanie Michel, who at the time launched a Kickstarter campaign for the film.

Caroline’s Wedding is the last story in Danticat’s collection Krik? Krak!, which was published in 1995 and centers on Gracina (Grace) Azile, who, with her mother has immigrated to the United States from Haiti, her sister Caroline who was born in the United States, and her deceased father. It explores generational and cultural conflicts triggered by Caroline’s marriage to an African-American rather than a Haitian man. The narrative set in the nineties introduces readers to games, beliefs, and rituals that are part of the Haitian culture.

Michel is set to adapt the work along with co-writers France-Luce Beeson and Darcy Miller.

The project is being called the first feature adaptation of Danticat’s work. Previously a film version of her novel The Dew Breaker was long in the works, with HBO attached and Danny Glover, Sophie Okonedo and Chiwetel Ejiofor in talks to star at different points in its development, though there’s been no recent news on whether that film will come to fruition.

Danticat is the author of several fiction and non-fiction books for both adults and children. She is a 2009 MacArthur Fellow. Her most recent book is The Art of Death: Writing the Final Story.

Perrier is the co-founder of the popular digital network and brand, Black&SexyTV. She has co-starred in several indie films, including Nefertiti Nguvu’s acclaimed drama In the Morning, and is well known for her starring role as Chick in Black&SexyTV’s digital series The Couple (which scored an HBO development deal). She will also play the lead role of Susan in Jennifer Sharp’s A Great Movie. Her feature directorial debut, Jezebel, is in post-production.
