This Is Us producer Kay Oyegun will write the screenplay for the adaptation of Angie Thomas’ novel, On the Come Up, according to Deadline. George Tillman Jr., who directed the film adaptation of The Hate U Give, will direct this film as well.

The film is set in the same universe as Thomas’ debut book The Hate U Give and follows Bri, a young rapper whose father, himself a rapping legend, died before he ever went mainstream. The legendary status of her father within the community in many ways puts a shadow over her own burgeoning career. However, her work becomes viral as she fuels her frustration of her mother’s work struggles and her own experiences with bullying into her songs.

Along with her work on This Is Us, Oyegun is also writing the script for the film adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s book, Children of Blood and Bone. Back in 2017, Shadow And Act also reported that Oyegun is writing the script for an upcoming Angela Davis biopic.
