One of Netflix's First British Children's Series Premieres - And It Has a Young, Black Female Lead

One of Netflix’s first British children’s series, which was announced last fall (and which also has a young black female lead), premiered over the weekend on the premium SVOD platform.

Previously-known as “Untitled Horse Mystery Project,” the 10-episode coming-of-age drama from Lime Pictures is titled “Free Rein.” The original scripted program follows an American teenager, Zoe, and her summer of intrigue in the English countryside. During her stay at Bright Field Stables, 15-year-old Zoe’s life changes forever when she meets the mysterious horse Raven, whose friendship gives Zoe the strength to deal with issues and explore new relationships. Faced with personal and physical challenges at every turn, Zoe’s inspirational journey teaches its target audience about failing, and learning to pick yourself up again.

The series stars relative newcomer Jaylen Barron as Zoe. She’s joined by Céline Buckens, Kerry Ingram, Natalie Gumede, Geoffrey McGivern, and Manpreet Bambra.

Andy Yeatman, Netflix’s head of children’s programmes, said that the project is meant show young viewers characters “who are learning to deal with and overcome hardship.”

The series is among the first fruits of a push into original children’s programming by Netflix, first announced last year.

Season 1 of “Free Rein” has premiered on Netflix and is now available to stream.

For some reason, there’s no official trailer for it. So you’ll just have to check out an episode or 2 if you’re curious and you have a Netflix streaming account.
