Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom might have made Viola Davis the most Oscar-nominated Black woman in the award show’s history, but it also created more history with its hair and makeup team.

As Variety reports, the film’s hair department lead Mia Neal and Davis’ hairstylist Jamika Wilson are the first Black women to earn nominations for makeup and hair. Neal talked about her feelings in a statement, saying, “I am overwhelmed with gratitude to be honored by such a prestigious committee.”

“To be with Jamika and for us to be the first African Americans nominated in this category is overwhelming,” she continued. “I have to raise my expectations for myself because this was something I never thought that I could achieve.”

Neal also echoed the same sentiments, saying, “You can raise the bar now. You can be recognized in this way as well.”
