'P-Valley' Creator Katori Hall Lands Deal With Lionsgate To Develop New Projects, Will Start Fund Supporting Black Playwrights

P-Valley creator Katori Hall has signed an overall deal with Lionsgate Television. The deal also includes the creation of a fund to help Black playwrights.

Under the deal, Hall will create and develop new projects for the television arm of Lionsgate along with working on the second season of her critically-acclaimed series.

“Adapting my play from the stage to the screen was a decade-long odyssey, and I’m so grateful that the journey led me to a studio that understands the value of complex storytelling centered on marginalized people of color,” said Hall in a statement. “I’m thrilled about this partnership with Lionsgate and I look forward to continuing to tell bold, impactful stories with the ability to reach a rich, diverse, global audience.”

The fund Hall will develop will commission Black playwrights who are currently struggling during 2020’s unique set of circumstances. Hall will also mentor the playwrights chosen for the program.

“In this unprecedented moment, Black playwrights are particularly struggling–so much so that I fear some will leave the artform forever,” said Hall. “This would undoubtedly be a major loss. Without theater, there would be no me. In fact, there would be no P-Valley. That’s why I’ve partnered with Lionsgate on this initiative to help ensure that American Theater is more inclusive and diverse when the curtain rises again.”

Scott Herbst, Executive Vice President of Television for Lionsgate, said in a statement how “honored” the studio is to partner with Hall, “a storyteller just as passionate about and dedicated to creating great, powerful stories as we are.”

“Everything she pens is an incredible work of art, and we’re excited to collaborate on many more groundbreaking projects like P-Valley that cut through the clutter in today’s television landscape.”

P-Valley became a smash hit during its 2020 premiere, earning the highly-coveted 100 percent fresh rating from Rotten Tomatoes. The second season will come back to STARZ in 2021.
