For many fans, it still seems surreal that Earl “DMX” Simmons has passed away. As fans across the world are astonished and in disbelief, those who knew him personally sit in the totality of their loss, trying to cope with the reality that DMX will no longer share his deliberate joy, words of wisdom nor infectious laughter and love.

As tributes continue to be published, one in particular has tugged on the heartstrings of readers. DMX’s goddaughter, actress and Power Book II: Ghost star Paige Hurd, took to Instagram to post the last photo she took with X and a heartfelt message.

Hurd wrote,  “7 days prior… This is was the last time we hugged, we danced, we held hands. The last time we said I love you. The last time I would ever hear you scream PUMPKINNN. When we are together we are inseparable, & we DO NOT play about each other.”

She continued, “I just can’t believe this was our goodbye. Shock has been my feeling the past month since I got the worst call in the middle of the night. The shock & grief is heavy, uncomfortable and hard to express. I just don’t have much yet, forgive my silence. I’m trying but right now I don’t have the best words. I love you so much. I’m so proud to be your goddaughter. You are a part of my world and my heart aches terribly these days and will never stop. Love, Pumpkin.”

Hurd became the goddaughter of DMX and his then-wife, Tashera Simmons, after her role in the 2003 action film Cradle 2 the Grave. In the film, she played X’s on-screen daughter.

Paige shared more photos of her and X later that evening with the caption, “just in awe of these.”
