The second of the four Power spinoffs in development at Starz has cast its lead actor.

Relative newcomer Mekai Curtis will play the young Kanan Stark in Power Book III: Raising Kanan, the 90s-set spinoff. Kanan Stark was portrayed by Power executive producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson in the flagship series.

Curtis joins Patina Miller, who will portray Kanan’s mother, and Omar Epps, who has been cast in an undisclosed role.

Here’s the official description: Smart, driven and still naïve, Kanan’s world revolves around his mother, Raq (Miller), who raised him by herself. She is his everything. At the same time, he is beginning to get a sense of not only the world around him but his place in said world. Kanan wants to be just like his mother…and that’s the problem. He’s young and wide-eyed and doesn’t know how the hustle works. And even more importantly, his mother is not nearly as keen as he is for him to follow in her footsteps. Theirs is a complicated relationship that only gets more problematic as time goes on.

Sascha Penn is the Power Book III: Raising Kanan showrunner. The show is produced by 50 Cent and franchise creator Courtney A. Kemp.

Other Power spinoffs at Starz include Power Book II: Ghostwhich stars Mary J. Blige. The two other spinoffs are one focused on Larenz Tate’s Councilman Tate and Joseph Sikora’s Tommy. Those two are in early development.
