The first trailer has debuted for Rashaad Ernesto Green’s Premature. The film’s co-writer, Zora Howard, stars in the film. It first premiered last year at Sundance and was later acquired by IFC Films.

Here’s the official description: On a summer night in Harlem during her last months at home before starting college, seventeen-year-old poet Ayanna (Howard) meets Isaiah (Joshua Boone), a charming music producer who has just moved to the city. It’s not long before these two artistic souls are drawn together in a passionate summer romance. But as the highs of young love give way to jealousy, suspicion, and all-too-real consequences, Ayanna must confront the complexities of the adult world—whether she is ready or not. Emotionally raw, intimate, and honest, Premature is at once timeless and bracingly contemporary in its portrait of a young woman navigating the difficult choices that can shape a life.

“Rashaad’s daring filmmaking coupled with a brilliant performance by Zora Howard is exactly the kind of film that we work to support,” said Arianna Bocco, IFC Films’ EVP Acquisitions and Productions, in an earlier statement. “Without a doubt, Premature marks Rashaad as a major new cinematic voice to contend with.”

The film received positive reviews after its Sundance premiere. Shadow And Act’s Aramide Tinubu wrote that the film “flows beautifully as a sexual awakening of a young Black woman.”
