Legendary’s adaptation of the DC Comics/Vertigo title, Prince of Cats, has found its director. Spike Lee will helm the project.

Selwyn Seyfu Hinds wrote the initial script. Lee will do a rewrite, working with Hinds and the graphic novel’s writer, Ron Wimberly.

Prince of Cats is described as “an ’80s-set hip-hop take on Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, with the tragic star-crossed love story seen through the eyes of Tybalt, Juliet’s angry and duel-loving cousin. The film centers on Tybalt and his Capulet brothers, who navigate Da People’s Republic of Brooklyn, where underground sword dueling — including katanas — with the rival Montagues blossoms into a vibrant world. That world includes hip-hop essentials such as DJing, emceeing, breakdancing and graffiti.”

When the project was first announced, it was said to be a starring vehicle for LaKeith Stanfield.

Lee’s next film, Netflix’s Da 5 Bloods, stars Chadwick Boseman and Jonathan Majors. It is currently in post-production.
