Ahead of its series premiere, Netflix has released the trailer for Queen Sono. It is Netflix’s first African original series that they’ve produced from inception. It is a spy thriller led by Quantico star Pearl Thusiwho stars in the titular role. The series will launch in over 190 countries.

Thusi plays “a highly trained top spy in a South African agency whose purpose is to better the lives of African citizens. While taking on her most dangerous mission yet, she must also face changing relationships in her personal life.” The cast also includes Vuyo Dabula playing Shandu, an ex-spy who has taken a different path, and Sechaba Morojele as Dr. Sid, director of the SOG. Chi Mhende, Loyiso Madinga and Rob Van Vuuren, play agents on his team. Kate Liquorish plays Ekaterina, heiress of an oligarch family with ulterior motives. Khathu Ramabulana plays Queen’s childhood friend, William, now in a relationship with Enhle Maphumulo’s Nova. Abigail Kubeka plays Mazet, Queen’s beloved Gogo, who has always supported Queen, no matter the trouble she gets herself into. Connie Chiume, Otto Nobela and James Ngcobo round out the cast.

Showrunner and director Kagiso Lediga and director Tebogo Malope both helm three episodes of the first season. Tamsin Andersson executive produces.

Queen Sono is set to launch on February 28, 2020, on Netflix. It follows the South African series, Shadow, which was Netflix’s first acquired original series from Africa.
