Following the critical and commercial success of the historical drama Selma and the documentary 13th, Ava DuVernay took the television world by storm with the debut of her series Queen Sugar

Based on the 2014 novel by Natalie Baszile, Queen Sugar chronicles the lives of the Bordeleons, a trio of siblings who tackle how to deal with their deceased father’s 800-acre sugarcane farm. Starring Rutina Wesley, Tina Lifford, Dawn Lyen Gardener, Kofi Siriboe and Bianca Lawson, the show has been critically acclaimed and often hailed as one of the best shows on television.

As portrayed by Rutina Wesley, Nova Bordelon is the eldest Bordeleon sibling. Siriboe portrays Ralph Angel, the youngest Bordelon sibling looking to better himself for the sake of his son, Blue. Dawn-Lyen Gardner portrays Charlotte “Charley” Bordelon West, the middle child of the Bordelon trio and the only half-sibling to Ralph and Nova.

“The way Ava creates space to allow these characters to embody real-world experiences is television at its finest and we are proud to continue this ground-breaking series,” said Oprah Winfrey, CEO of OWN in a prior statement about the show. “I hear from so many people that they see themselves in the Bordelon family, and my hope is that through this kind of storytelling the hearts and minds of people are opened for a deeper understanding and empathy of one another.”

Ahead of the show’s season 5 premiere, we reported that Queen Sugar was renewed for season 6 at OWN.

“What a joy and an honor to continue the stories of ‘Queen Sugar’ with our partners at OWN and Warner Bros.,” said DuVernay regarding the show’s renewal. “On behalf of every producer, editor, costumer, grip, writer, cast member and all departments involved in making this series, we’re delighted to delve into a sixth season and to bring our beautiful audience more of the Bordelon family.”
