Raising Dion has been renewed for a second season at Netflix. The news was announced by the streaming giant on Thursday. While it is unclear if the new season will air in 2020, production on the new season will begin this year.

The series, produced by Michael B. Jordan, stars Ja’Siah Young, Alisha Wainwright, Jason Ritter and Jazmyn Simon.

Based on Dennis Liu’s comic book and viral short film of the same name, which revolves around a Black mother who discovers her young son has multiple and continually changing abilities, Raising Dion follows the story of Nicole Reese who raises her son, Dion, after the death of her husband, Mark (Jordan). The usual dramas of raising a son as a single mom are amplified when Dion manifests several magical, superhero-like abilities. Nicole must now keep her son’s gifts secret with the help of Mark’s best friend, Pat (Ritter), and protect Dion from antagonists out to exploit him while figuring out the origin of his abilities.

The first season has an 82 percent rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critical consensus reading, “While its family drama and superhero aspirations don’t quite come together, compelling performances and a sense of wonder keep Raising Dion afloat and suggest that with a little more guidance it could become something great.”
