Regina Hall Books Lead in Will Packer/Malcolm D. Lee 'Girls Trip' Project for Universal (Updated With Release Date + Plot Details)

UPDATE – 4 hours after my initial announcement of Regina Hall being cast in the film: Universal just set a release date for the film and also a logline, giving us some idea of what the film is about. First, “Girl Trip” will be released on Friday, August 11, 2017. And second, the film’s official logline reads: When four lifelong friends travel to New Orleans for the annual Essence Festival, sisterhoods are rekindled, wild sides are rediscovered, and there’s enough dancing, drinking, brawling and romancing to make the Big Easy blush. And finally, the film will indeed be called “Girl Trip.”

The original announcement follows after the jump…

And the beat goes on for super producer Will Packer (see my Cannes post earlier today on his coming on board to produce a new film with Halle Berry and Michael Douglas attached to star)…

Packer and director Malcolm D. Lee have teamed up on a new project tentatively-titled “Girls Trip,” which was first announced in 2014, and has now cast its lead in Regina Hall, as well as writers who will pen the script in Kenya Barris and Tracy Oliver (both scripted this year’s “Barbershop: The Next Cut” which Malcolm D. Lee also helmed).

Set up at Universal Pictures – the studio with which Packer has a first-look production deal under his Will Packer Productions banner – details on “Girls Trip” (working title) are still being kept under-wraps for now, so let the speculation begin, if only based on the working title alone!

James Lopez, head of motion pictures for Will Packer Productions, will executive produce.

Regina Hall will next be seen opposite Morris Chestnut in the Screen Gems thriller “When The Bough Breaks,” which opens on September 16.

Packer is busy, with projects set for the small and big screens, including ABC’s new comedy series “Uncle Buck,” which debuts this summer, plus the HISTORY channel’s “Roots” remake, and a remake of “Jacob’s Ladder” (starring Michael Ealy), as well as David E. Talbert’s holiday dramedy “Almost Christmas,” which will be in theaters later this fall.
