“Straight Outta Compton” star Jason Mitchell will be honored with the Rising Star Award at next month’s San Diego Film Festival, the festival announced today.

The 2016 edition of the annual event takes place from September 28 to October 2, promising the best independent films from both U.S. and international filmmakers, screening during the five-day celebration.

Jason will be honored on September 29 at the festival’s “Night of the Stars Tribute” at the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla.

The 29-year-old actor, who hails from New Orleans, has been acting for just the last six years, after he picked up the craft as a hobby in a bid to straighten his life out. He quickly began winning roles, though his breakout performance didn’t come until 2015’s “Straight Outta Compton,” for which he received much praise for his portrayal of late N.W.A. rapper Eazy-E. The film, based on the true story of the legendary hip hop group, received rave reviews from fans and critics, and garnered an Oscar and SAG Award nomination.

Mitchell has four new films on his slate, including the big budget “Kong: Skull Island,” opposite Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson.
