RuPaul Dedicates Record-Breaking Emmy Win To Late 'Drag Race' Icon Chi Chi DeVayne

UPDATE: RuPaul’s Drag Race also won Outstanding Reality-Competition Program.

Previously reported: During the final night of the Creative Arts Emmys, RuPaul won his fifth consecutive Host for a Reality or Competition Program trophy for RuPaul’s Drag Race. It breaks the record for the most wins in the category.

In the acceptance speech, RuPaul highlighted the current political moments as well as honoring the late season 8 and All Stars 3 star Chi Chi DeVayne (Zavion Davenport), who passed away recently.

“On behalf of VH1, World of Wonder, and our incredible cast and crew, I want to thank the Academy for this great honor. I’ve always said, every time I bat my false eyelashes, I’m making a political statement,” he said during the speech. Well, tonight, the only political statement I want to make is this — love.”

He continued, “Love for our LGBT brothers and sisters, love for Black queens and brown queens, and love for the United States of America, where a little gay boy with nothing more than a pussycat wig and a dream can build an international platform that celebrates sweet, sensitive souls everywhere,” he continued. “Hey, I’ve got an idea – on November 3rd make this your ringtone: The time has come – for you to vote for your life. And if you’re not registered to vote, go to vote.gov right now. I’d like to dedicate this Emmy to one of my girls – Chi Chi DeVayne, may you rest in power and perfection. Thank you and goodnight.”

RuPaul’s Drag Race has also won several other awards so far this week, including Outstanding Casting for a Reality Program, Outstanding Picture Editing for a Structured Reality or Competition Program, Outstanding Contemporary Hairstyling for a Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Program and Outstanding Contemporary Makeup for a Variety, Nonfiction or Reality Program

The main Emmy categories will be announced during Sunday night’s ceremony, in which the show could win Outstanding Reality-Competition Program.
