Filmmaker extraordinaire Ryan Coogler was shortlisted for a tremendous year-end honor this week.
The Black Panther director was one of the nominees in contention for Time’s Person of the Year, joined by Donald Trump, Separated Families, Vladimir Putin, Robert Mueller, Christine Blasey Ford, Jamal Khashoggi, the March for Our Lives Activists, Moon Jae-in and Meghan Markle. The magazine’s honor selects the person or the people with the most significant impact on the world for that year — whether good, bad or in-between.
Announced Tuesday, the honor went to Khashoggi and other imprisoned or killed journalists the magazine called “guardians and the war on truth.” The others were the Capital Gazette in Annapolis, Maryland, where five people were shot and killed at the newspaper’s offices in June; formerly arrested Philippine journalist Maria Ressa and Reuters journalists Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, both of whom are detained in Myanmar.
Coogler, the entertainment industry’s representative on the list, also has a big 2019 coming up. His latest film, Wrong Answer, starring Michael B. Jordan, Brie Larson and Jamie Foxx, is due in theaters next year, and the highly anticipated Black Panther sequel is also expected to begin filming at some point next year.
