UPDATE: Shane Gillis has been fired from Saturday Night Live. In a statement, the show says:

“After talking with Shane Gillis, we have decided that he will not be joining ‘SNL.’ We want SNL to have a variety of voices and points of view within the show, and we hired Shane on the strength of his talent as a comedian and his impressive audition for SNL. We were not aware of his prior remarks that have surfaced over the past few days. The language he used is offensive, hurtful and unacceptable. We are sorry that we did not see these clips earlier, and that our vetting process was not up to our standard.”

After we first reported about Gillis’ use of a racial slur, prior homophobic comments also came to light.

Previously reported:

Just mere hours after being announced as one of three new Saturday Night Live cast members, Shane Gillis is under fire after a video has resurfaced which depicts him using a racial slur.

The video gained traction after being shared by writer Seth Simons on Twitter.

The clip seems to be from the podcast version of Gillis’ show, “Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast.” After saying the slur, he later notes that their conversation had “nice racism, good racism.” The video is very recent, having been recorded in September 2018.

The two other new Saturday Night Live cast members are Chloe Fineman and Bowen Yang. The latter is the first full-time cast member of Asian descent and the third openly gay cast member.

After the exit of Leslie Jones, one of the two sole Black women on the show, no Black women were added as new cast members this season.

NBC has yet to make a statement on the video.
