Matthew A. Cherry has signed on as a director for the upcoming Saved By the Bell reboot on NBC’s streaming platform, Peacock.
The Oscar-winning director of the animated short film Hair Love posted a photo on Twitter of his name card, writing in part, “Day 1 #SavedByTheBell.”

While a majority of the responses to the tweet were positive, a lot of people also used Cherry’s tweet to ask for the return of Lark Voorhies, who played Lisa Turtle in the original series and, so far, hasn’t been asked to be a part of the reboot. As reported by Shadow And Act in February, Voorhies revealed her feelings on Dr. Oz.
“I have to admit I did feel a bit slighted and hurt when I was not invited to be a part of the Saved by the Bell reunion, as well as other cast members events. Yet, of course, I also realized that having this puzzling disorder may have played a major part in that actual decision,” she said referencing her struggles with mental health.
So far, most of the remaining cast members, including Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley will reprise their roles. New cast members include Dexter Darden, Josie Totah, Haskiri Velazquez, Alycia Pascual-Peña and Mitchell Hoog.
