Despite the outpouring of love over the new The Lion King trailer, tons of fans have also expressed their frustration at the new look for the film’s villain, Scar, voiced by Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Many have used their Twitter platforms to make fun of Scar’s less-than-full mane, which is no longer black and luscious like it was in the 1994 animated film. Instead, it’s patchy. Another change is Scar’s fur color, which is no longer dark brown, but a sandy color like Mufasa and Simba.
This is only a smattering of what nostalgic Twitter users had to say about Scar’s new look:
This is how they had Scar’s mane looking in the Lion King trailer. pic.twitter.com/pLTwtfRLmj

Can’t believe they’ve straightwashed Scar in the new Lion King film. Just another example of how Hollywood is failing on queer representation. pic.twitter.com/gSUQ9BIqzJ

So they couldn’t cast a darkskin lion for Scar? I’m tired of Hollywood and their obsession with Euro-lion features pic.twitter.com/VSTaz3FN6B

Biggest takeaway from the Lion King trailer: this film’s depiction of Scar is weak. Scar is probably one of the most important parts of this movie. Scar is one of Disney’s greatest villains and this film’s Scar to me will not even closely compare to the original. pic.twitter.com/SaD5PnBWyd

I’ve seen the Lion King trailer. Shit is pure Mufasa propaganda. They had Scar looking dry and malnutritioned, like that man wasn’t a bad bitch in the animated movie.

I’m all for the lion king remake, (mostly because of Donald Glover), but these two pictures highlight how having live action cartoon characters restricts the portrayal of emotion, I mean just look at the picture of scar in the original photo compared to the new one #TheLionKing pic.twitter.com/aFpREnNzY3

Disney took the majestic being that is Scar and turned him into a ragged lion without luscious, dark mane. Just…. why. #NotMyScar

okay, I like the new lion king trailer. I’m just wondering how we’re supposed to tell these lions and lionesses apart when they all look like real animals. Scar isn’t even darker or anything. He just looks like he got ran over by a truck. #NotMyScar

Also I am just going to say it. This is #NotMyScar. I will forever call this lion “Not Scar” because I refuse to believe that Not Scar is actually the wonderful villain from the superior 1994 film. pic.twitter.com/t46faO1Qqm

One commenter came with some nature facts, giving a legitimate reason as to why Scar’s redesign might make sense for this more accurate adaptation.
It’s factually accurate though ????????♀️ Lions with longer and darker manes are the dominant males in a pride. Shorter, lighter manes indicate either young lions, or the non-dominant male.

But other Twitter users have also provided real life evidence of lions with black manes, proving that Disney made a conscious decision not to pay homage to Scar’s original design.
The weird thing bout Scar in Lion King 2019 is that black-maned lions ARE REAL, and they easily could have based him off of one.
Lions with darker manes are also more aggressive and lead prides more often than lighter-maned males. Thus why Scar, the villain, has a black mane. pic.twitter.com/3t6E7eUsDw

Yeah… The more I am looking, they should have taken models from the mapogo lions to make scar for the Lion King. pic.twitter.com/xVLISmhfZs

The Lion King fans will argue over this until the film drops July 19, so we’ll have plenty of memes and hilarious comments to enjoy until then.
