It’s being reported this morning that Sean Combs, along with Imagine
Entertainment
co-founder and producer Brian
Grazer
, are teaming to produce a remake of director Abel Ferrara’s cult gangster classic King of New York.

The original 1990 film starring Christopher Walken, Laurence
Fishburne
and Wesley Snipes, was an
urban variation of the Robin Hood story, in which a drug dealer, played by Walken, recently released from prison, conceives
of a plan to wipe out all of his former competition, and to distribute the
profits among the poor and needy.

Combs, who may also “possibly” play the lead (or, hopefully, possibly not), optioned
the remake rights to the film two years ago, and Gazer was quoted as saying that
the planned remake
won’t be exactly the same, but will have the same hard-core gangster
feel.”

And considering that American
Gangster
with Denzel Washington was
a big hit for Grazer and Imagine Entertainment, one can understand why he’s
looking for a follow up.
