Not a big surprise, given how extraordinarily well the freshman series has performed for the network, growing in ratings numbers over the course of its first season.

NBC has announced this afternoon that it has renewed its critically-beloved new drama series “This Is Us,” for not one, but 2 more seasons (at least for now). That’s confidence, giving it a 2-season renewal before the first season ends.

The series premiered to impressive numbers and critical praise in September 2016, and has continued to rank as the top-rated new series in the key 18 to 49-year-old demo. It’s also NBC’s most-watched scripted show in the Tuesday at-9 pm time slot in more than 7 years.

“It’s a rare moment in this business when a show so instantly delivers both critical acclaim and hit ratings, but ‘This Is Us’ is just such an extraordinary achievement,” said Jennifer Salke, President, NBC Entertainment, in a previous statement. “Creator Dan Fogelman, along with co-directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa and the gifted producers, cast and crew, has delivered the kind of heart and depth that resonates with every segment of the audience, and we’re proud to extend its presence on our schedule.”

On digital platforms, it holds the record for NBC’s most-viewed series premiere, more than doubling the network’s previous record for most one-day views of a debuting series across NBC digital platforms.

“This Is Us” was the most anticipated new series heading into fall with its trailer viewed more than 127 million times following the show’s announcement at the May upfronts.

“This Is Us” follows a unique ensemble (a family and its extensions) whose paths cross and their life stories intertwine in curious ways. But it’s so much more than anyone would expect – a smart, touching and optimistic drama series that Americans facing a potentially dark 4 years under a Trump administration seems to be drawn to for obvious reasons.

The cast includes Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Justin Hartley, Chrissy Metz, Sterling K. Brown, Susan Kelechi Watson, Chris Sullivan and Ron Cephas Jones.

The series received nominations for Best Television Series – Drama at the 74th Golden Globe Awards and Best Drama Series at the 7th Critics’ Choice Awards, as well as being chosen as a Top Television Program by the American Film Institute. The cast has also received accolades, with Mandy Moore and Chrissy Metz receiving Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress, and Sterling K. Brown receiving a SAG nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series.

Dan Fogelman serves as writer and executive producer with Don Todd. Jess Rosenthal, Charlie Gogolak and directors John Requa and Glenn Ficarra also executive produce.

“This Is Us” is produced by 20th Century Fox Television.

The 18-episode first season ends in March, with 5 more episodes to go.
