Exactly 1 week from today, the festivities begin!
As Tambay announced a few weeks ago, Shadow And Act will be at Cannes for the very first time this year. Well, I’ll be at Cannes this year, representing Shadow And Act.
Among the many films on offer, I’m particularly looking forward to Terence Malick’s Tree of Life, Lynne Ramsay’s We Need to Talk About Kevin, and Lars Von Triers’ Melancholia. Yes, I do like my entertainment to have a thought provokingly depressing edge to it but I’ll try and keep all reviews upbeat! 🙂
So far there doesn’t seem to be much colour on offer in the official selection this year. But with the International Village featuring pavilions from across around the world, as well as at least one short film in the Short Corner and at least two people I know who’ll be part of this year’s Creative Minds in Cannes Program, including our very own Curtis The Media Man (gosh, I know such talented people), I think there’ll be plenty there for and by people from the diaspora. And, of course, winner of last year’s Jury Prize for his film, A Screaming Man, Chadian director Mahamet Saleh Haroun is one of this year’s official judges of the feature competition, so the diaspora will be in full force on every level.
However, to save me running around like a woman possessed, if you’ll be at Cannes in any capacity, whether to pitch a project/script, in the Marché with a finished film you’re seeking distribution for, or if you have or know of any project S&A readership might be interested in, from anywhere in the diaspora – Africa, Europe, Caribbean, The Americas – that will have representation at Cannes, then don’t hide your light under a bushel. Let us know you’ll be there and hopefully we can help spread the word and get your project out there for people to see and read about.
You can contact me in the first instance via email ({encode=”mswoo@cms.shadowandact.com” title=”mswoo@cms.shadowandact.com”}) and we’ll take it from there.
Like I said before, I do know of one film, When Beautiful People Do Ugly Things, which will screen in the Short Film Corner and, I’ll get to meet the filmmakers behind it and introduce them to you. In the meantime, here’s a trailer:
