Announced at ongoing annual Television Critics Association event in Los Angeles, where The CW is currently presenting its upcoming season lineup, Sharon Leal is joining “Supergirl” to play Miss Martian.

Recall that the series originated on CBS last season where it didn’t perform as expected, and so has been moved to The CW, where it probably should’ve been in the first place. The series’ developers – Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg – also created other CW shows in “Arrow” and “The Flash” so it makes sense.

According to the DC wiki, Miss Martian (real name M’gann M’orzz, alias Megan Morse) is the niece and former protégé of the Martian Manhunter. Fans of the “Supergirl” series are already aware that David Harewood plays Martian Manhunter.

Miss Martian possesses abilities similar to Martian Manhunter, including superhuman strength and stamina comparable to that of a Kryptonian. She is invulnerable and can enhance this invulnerability by making herself super dense. She also has the ability to shapeshift and she can use this to regenerate herself at a rapid rate. Her shapeshifting can be used at will and in an unlimited application, including adopting human or monstrous appearance, elongating her limbs, growing to immense size, altering the chemical composition of her body, etc. This also extends to her being able to create natural body weapons. She is also a powerful psychic with major applications of this being telepathy and telekinesis. She can also use her telekinesis to fly. Her telepathy is one of her strongest abilities.

Like all Martians, she can be weakened by fire or extreme heat.

Unfortunately, nothing has been shared on how much the character/Leal will be used in the series, but a formal announcement will likely be made eventually, with specifics.

The actress was most recently seen on the small screen in a recurring role on “Grimm,” as well as playing a series regular road on “Recovery Road.”
