Legendary television helmer Shonda Rhimes is known for creating shows such as Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, as well as executive producing shows like How To Get Away With Murder and Bridgerton.

In an interview with Variety, the revered television titan gave her two cents on the controversy surrounding Grey’s Anatomy leading lady Ellen Pompeo.

For those unfamiliar, Pompeo garnered backlash from social media following an episode her podcast Tell Me With Ellen Pompeo, in which she revealed she had an exchange with Denzel Washington, who was a guest director on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

“[The other actor] made this choice to speak very softly,” Pompeo said “And [Meredith] was pissed that [she] had to sit there and listen to this apology, and he wasn’t looking at [her] in the eye. [So] I yelled at him. I was like, ‘Look at me when you apologize. Look at me.’”

The exchange then reportedly escalated.

“And that wasn’t in the dialogue. And Denzel went ham on my a**. [Denzel] was like, ‘I’m the director. Don’t you tell him what to do.’ I was like, ‘Listen motherf*cker, this is my show,” Pompeo continued. “This is my set. Who are you telling?’ Like, you barely know where the bathroom is!”

Many on social media chastised Pompeo for her treatment of Washington, an Oscar-winning actor and director.

However, one person not paying attention to social media sites like Instagram or Twitter is Rhimes. 

“The relief and the luxury that I have is that I don’t really pay attention to Twitter or Instagram — or articles,” Rhimes told Variety regarding the Pompeo controversy. “So I feel like, whatever happens, happens. But I also feel like Ellen’s going to be Ellen.”

Rhimes is gearing up for Netflix’s Inventing Anna, the first series that she has created herself since Scandal.
