Destination weddings get a little intense in the upcoming Prime Video comedy Shotgun Wedding. Dropping on Prime Video Jan. 27, the film stars Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel as a couple wanting to have a fantastic destination wedding, but their families make it anything but.

Stars D’Arcy Carden and Cheech Marin told Shadow and Act Managing Editor Trey Mangum that working on Shotgun Wedding involved peeling back the layers of their characters.

“I think that’s my favorite thing…to do with a character is when there is more than meets the eye, whatever that may be, when you’re revealing layers throughout the thing, that’s really fun,” said Carden. “That’s almost like having your own little secret when you’re acting. It’s fun to play with those dualities and see what you can reveal and what you can keep hidden. It’s such a fun character. This character was a blast…we had so much fun.”

Marin, who plays Lopez’s father in the film, said that for him, his character has to deal with interacting with his daughter and his ex-wife while remembering that love is at the center of his father-daughter relationship.

“The only thing that kept driving me through that was the thought that I love my daughter and I want the best for her even though I hardly ever agree with anything she does,” he said.

The film was shot in the Dominican Republic, which Carden said she loved. But filming a movie in the tropics is different than attending a wedding, and both Carden and Marin talked about what destination weddings could feel like after watching the film.

“If you’re talking it like the movie, that’s a little scary, to go to a destination wedding,” she said. “But as far as us getting to go to the Dominican Republic and getting to shoot there stuff, I’m all for it. Give me a tropical location any day.”

“I guess [attending a destination wedding] would be fun, but this one was fraught with adventure,” Marin added.

Directed by Jason Moore and written by Mark Hammer, Shotgun Wedding brings a comedic edge to the idea of a destination wedding as two families try to get along just as an even adventure takes over the wedding proceedings. According to the description:

In Shotgun Wedding, Darcy (Jennifer Lopez) and Tom (Josh Duhamel) gather their lovable but very opinionated families for the ultimate destination wedding, just as the couple begin to get cold feet. And if that wasn’t enough of a threat to the celebration, suddenly everyone’s lives are in danger when the entire party is taken hostage. “’Til Death Do Us Part” takes on a whole new meaning in this hilarious, adrenaline-fueled adventure as Darcy and Tom must save their loved ones—if they don’t kill each other first.
