Sing 2 is coming just in time for the holiday season, and there is a TikTok challenge that you’ll absolutely want to be a part of!

Shadow and Act exclusively caught up with choreographer Sherrie Silver (Childish Gambino’s This Is America, Cardi B, Rihanna, Saturday Night Live) about her involvement in the film (which we can exclusively report), as well as the TikTok challenge and music video for “Suéltate” that she choreographed as well.

“I got involved about two years ago when Illumination reached out and they told me that they and Garth [Jennings] were a fan of my work,” she said. “So I was like, ‘What? You’re a fan of my work? I’m a fan of your work!’ So straight away, I was really excited to be a part of the project because I love animation anyway. And I just love the fact that it’s limitless with what you can do for the characters. I had previously done a couple of animation things but never done a whole animation movie. So I thought that this will be a fantastic opportunity.”

“Choreographing and animation is so much fun because with humans, you are limited,” she explained. “Can the human move their head this far? Whereas with animation, you can [have them move their] head all the way around.. [like] 360 degrees. So you can have more fun. You can make them jump up and do leaps instead of having to train an actor for months how to do the splits here. It’s up to the animators really and the illustrators. If they can draw it, then it can happen.”

The TikTok challenge, which launched Wednesday, is for the film’s song “Suéltate,” by Sam i featurring Anitta, BIA & Jarina De Marco.

“I’m excited for the TikTok challenge because one, I love the song and two, it’s one of the main songs in the film, so it’s getting people ready to watch it so when they actually watch it, they’re familiar with some of the moves and they’re familiar with the music as well,” she said. “And I’m just excited for everyone to get involved and still be a part of Sing 2 via social media, and then hopefully when the movie comes out, then they’ll carry their experience into the theater hall and watch the movie.”

Speaking about the music video, which she also choreographed, Silver said, “I think everyone did great. I’m proud of the artists because they didn’t have any prior rehearsal. I literally just sent a tutorial of the dance the night before and they came in and they killed it. it’s just great to be a part of every step of Sing 2, from the music video to the extra stuff, just the whole thing to be honest.”

All in all, Silver is excited for audiences to finally experience the film. “It’s just so heartwarming and I’m just so glad that it’s coming out just before Christmas and families can go and watch it,” she said. “It was like 33 members of my family went to go watch this movie the other day and they all loved it.”

The film stars Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Taron Egerton, Tori Kelly, Nick Kroll, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Pharrell Williams, Letitia Wright, Eric André, Chelsea Peretti and Bono.

Here’s the official description of the film:

Buster (McConaughey) has turned the New Moon Theater into a local hit, but Buster has his eyes on a bigger prize: Debuting a new show at the Crystal Tower Theater in glamorous Redshore City. But with no connections, Buster and his cast—including harried mother Rosita (Witherspoon), rocker Ash (Johansson), earnest Johnny (Egerton), shy Meena (Kelly) and, of course, provocateur Gunter (Kroll)—have to sneak their way into the world-famous Crystal Entertainment offices, run by ruthless mogul Jimmy Crystal (Cannavale). In a desperate attempt to get Mr. Crystal’s attention, Gunter spontaneously pitches an outrageous idea that Buster quickly runs with, promising that their new show will star rock legend Clay Calloway (Bono). Problem is, Buster has never met Clay, an artist who shut himself away from the world more than a decade ago after the loss of his wife. Even worse, Buster has failed to realize that Mr. Crystal is an egocentric gangster who would rather drop somebody off the roof of a building than be lied to. As Gunter helps Buster dream up an out-of-this-world theatrical masterpiece, and the pressure (and sinister threats) from Mr. Crystal mount, Rosita’s leading role in the show gets ripped away and handed to Mr. Crystal’s spoiled daughter, Porsha, played by Grammy-nominated artist Halsey. Desperate to save the show, and his life, Buster embarks on a quest to find Clay and persuade him to return to the stage. What begins as a dream of big-time success becomes an emotional reminder of the power of music to heal even the most broken heart.

Sing 2 is written and directed by Garth Jennings. The film is produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and by Janet Healy.

Dozens of hit songs are featured, from pop to rock, K-pop to Latin. Artists who have songs featured include: Billie Eilish, Drake, U2, The Weeknd, Prince, Taylor Swift, BTS, Cardi B, Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello.

Audiences can experience Sing 2 on Thanksgiving Saturday, Nov. 27, one month before the film’s official release on Dec. 22. Sneak preview screenings will be available at more than 1,000 theaters nationwide. It’ll be out everywhere on Christmas.
