Like most everything in Hollywood, movies of skateboarding culture skewers intensely toward the white and male. However, the first trailer for the Sundance hit Skate Kitchen subverts this notion in every way possible. The trailer, which premiered June 21, is the first narrative feature for Crystal Roselle, who garnered raves for her documentary The Wolfpack.

Currently standing at 100 percent on Rotten TomatoesSkate Kitchen chronicles the adventures of Camille (newcomer Rachelle Vinberg), a reserved teenage skateboarder who hails from Long Island and finds her tribe in the form of all-girl, New York City-based skateboarding crew known as Skate Kitchen. As she ingratiates herself more in the NYC skate culture, her relationship with her mother is on the brink of deterioration. Along the way, Camille gets entangled in a complicated romantic relationship with a skateboarder portrayed by Jaden Smith.

As a result of immersing herself in the world of NYC skate culture, the overall aesthetic of Crystal Roselle’s first narrative feature, by the looks of the trailer, evokes a style and tone of coming of age films such as Kids, albeit more lighthearted in tone. Written by Roselle and Jennifer Silverman, Skate Kitchen also stars Dede Lovelace, Nina Moran, Kabrina Adams, Ajani Russell, Jules Lorenzo, Brenn Lorenzo, Hisham Tawfiq and Elizabeth Rodriguez.
