'The Get Down' star Skylan Brooks has 24 hours left to live in crime-drama ‘nēar’

October 10th 2017

Filmmaker Korstiaan Vandiver, known for his award-winning project LU and most recently the developing of 12: The Tamir Rice Story is producing a feature-film nēar, which he also wrote and will direct. He is joined by producer Dwight Wilson II and executive producer Lionel Ntasano. The film nēar follows 17-year-old, Julian, played by Skylan Brooks (Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete, The Get Down, Crown Heights) upon his escape from the hospital on Christmas Eve, which is literally the last day of his life, he seeks to reconcile with his estranged father. Julian suffers from a rare disease "Danon", a heart condition that kills boys between the ages of 7-17 in months or as little as a day. It will be filmed in one take in the formerly bankrupt city of  Stockton, California. One of their goals is to use proceeds in order to create an endowment for Danon Disease Research at the University of Colorado.

The nēar team is currently campaigning on Seed and Spark Hometown Heroes Rally for $20,000. With a little over $10,000 raised and 3 days to go, they are close to a shot at $25k and the Duplass Brothers as executive producers of their film. With that in mind, they "welcome the plethora of cinephiles, followers and supporters for the production of the first American feature film shot in ONE TAKE."

“This film is more than just a crime drama, it is also a bit of a teenage love story, one, Native American, the other African American. This is the story of what happens when the systematically abused bond over a common disparity and Skylan Brooks is one of this generation's greatest young actors with the chops to pull it off," says Vandiver.
