'Smart Guy' Reboot: Tahj Mowry Gives Update On Its Progress

Tahj Mowry is best known for his role in the classic '90s sitcom, Smart Guy. The series, which ran from 1997 to 1999, chronicled the adventures of TJ Henderson (Mowry), a 10-year-old child prodigy whose intellect causes him to ump from fourth grade to high school. The series also starred Essence Atkins and Jason Weaver as TJ's siblings, Yvette and Marcus.

In a recent interview with Entertainment TonightMowry disclosed the status of the Smart Guy reboot.

"There’s been lots of Zoom meetings and talks about this, so we do have the ball rolling on it. It's just a matter of time and timing, but we do have the possible home for it," he said. "We do have a writer, and I feel like I came up with a really fresh take on how we can bring that back with the whole cast and something that is fresh and new. But also something that the diehard fans will still get that nostalgic aspect of it as well."

Mowry teased that you could find T.J. in a similar situation to the original show. "You will find T.J. just as he was in the original, a fish out of water. He was sort of exploring a new world for himself," he said. You'll find him in that same situation, but somewhere else. So I'll just say that."

He also acknowledges that T.J. is now of legal drinking age, and playfully adds with a laugh, "You'll be able to see him, maybe, have a tequila on the rocks."

Last year, Shadow and Act reported on the Smart Guy reboot, in which Mowry told Vice that the reboot would be "sort of going to be a sequel, a continuation."
