Snoop Dogg will star in an upcoming project from black-ish creator Kenya Barris.

He will star in MGM’s upcoming sports comedy The Underdoggs, which is set to be released on Oct. 20, 2023. Snoop Dogg will produce the film alongside black-ish creator Kenya Barris.

The music icon is no stranger to the acting world, having appeared in films such as Bones, Soul Plane and Starksy & Hutch.

Described as 'The Bad News Bears' in the world of youth football, 'The Underdoggs' chronicles the life of Jaycen “2JS” Jenning, a former NFL superstar who coaches youth football to avoid prison time after a nasty run-in with the law.

The Underdoggs is a real personal project for me considering that I’ve been coaching football for 15-plus years with the Snoop Youth Football League that I started with my long-time business partner Constance Schwartz-Morini,” Snoop Dogg said in a statement. Giving back to the community through football has taught us so many invaluable life lessons that we’ve been able to share with kids in similar situations like mine when I was growing up. My hope is that this movie will shed light on the realities that kids and adults face in the hood and within the complex world of football.”

The film is based on a pitch from Snoop Dogg and Schwartz-Morini. Danny Segal and Isaac Schamis will pen the script, which will be directed by Charles Stone.

“Snoop’s longtime commitment to his community via his youth football league is hugely inspiring to all of us at MGM,” MGM’s Chief Operating Officer Chris Brearton said in a statement. “We are thrilled to be working alongside this incredible creative team to bring this great comedy to moviegoing audiences, and to further MGM’s commitment to the theatrical exhibition when it hits theaters next October.”
