The controversial Disney film Song Of The South will not appear on Disney+.
According to Deadline, former Disney CEO and current executive chairman Bob Iger reiterated at an annual shareholders’ meeting that the 1946 Disney film will not be included on the streaming platform Disney+. Iger confirmed that the film wouldn’t be on Disney+, even with a disclaimer.
Several other dated Disney films, such as Dumbo, The Jungle Book and Lady and the Tramp are on the service but include a disclaimer about their outdated cultural depictions. Iger noted that Song of the South “is not appropriate in today’s world.”
The film revolves around Johnny, a 7-year-old boy who spends time on his grandmother’s plantation and befriends a worker who tells him Black folktales. The film has been the subject of controversy due to its racist depictions of Black people.
Earlier, we reported that Disney head Bob Iger said that the entire collection of films in the Disney vault would be put on Disney+ and we questioned whether it would include these racist offerings. Here’s what Iger said at the time: “…At some point fairly soon after launch it will house the entire Disney motion picture library, so the movies that you speak of that traditionally have been kept in a vault and brought out basically every few years will be on the service.”
