Spike Lee is claiming Bill Cosby took the idea for School Daze for A Different World.

In a Twitter post on Friday during a Netflix live tweet of School Daze, the prolific filmmaker made his claim loud and clear.

To put it in context, both School Daze and A Different World deal with the experiences of students at HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities).

Released in 1988, School Daze was inspired by Lee’s time as an undergraduate student at Morehouse College and stars Tisha Campbell, Giancarlo Esposito and Laurence Fishburne. Despite being released a year after A Different World, Lee claims that School Daze was shot before the classic show.

For those unfamiliar, A Different World was a spinoff of The Cosby Show. Created and executive produced by Cosby himself, the started off as the story chronicling Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet)’s time at the fictional HBCU, Hillman College. The ensemble included Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Dawnn Lewis, Darryl M. Bell, Sinbad, Charnele Brown, Cree Summer, Glynn Turman and Lou Myers.
