'Suicide Squad' Sequel: Idris Elba Will Be Playing A New Character, Not Deadshot; Viola Davis Expected To Return

April 5th 2019

There is a major new development in the Suicide Squad sequel, known now as The Suicide Squad.

It was originally reported weeks back that the character of Deadshot, portrayed by Will Smith in the first film, had been recast with Idris Elba due to scheduling conflicts with Smith. Now, Elba is still on board, but he won't be Deadshot.

Here's what Variety says: It is unknown what character Elba would now be playing, but after taking the last few weeks to discuss, everyone involved felt this was the right move. The team also did not want to feel as if it was disrespecting Smith, who helped bring this character to life for the first time, by replacing him with Elba. While many believe chances are still slim for a future return, the decision keeps the door open for Smith to possibly come back in future films, since his original reason for leaving had to do with scheduling and not creative differences.

Something else new and noteworthy in the Variety report is that Viola Davis is expected to reprise her role as Amanda Waller. The Wrap also reported yesterday that Davis would return. If this pans out, she'd likely join only two more returning characters: Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and Jai Courtney's Captain Boomerang.

The James Gunn-directed film has a release date of August 6, 2021.
