Afrostream, the subscription video on demand (SVOD) service for African American, African and Caribbean films and television series, has acquired the exclusive first run rights in France from Disney for the ABC Studios-produced hit TV comedy series “black-ish.” A premier date has been set for January 1, 2017, starting with Season 1. Season 2 and 3 will hit the service soon after.

Created by Kenya Barris, “black-ish” stars Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross as parents in an upper-middle-class African American family. Dre Johnson (Anderson) has it all: a great job, a beautiful wife, Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross), four kids and a big home in a classy neighborhood, but as a black man, he begins to question whether all his success has brought too much cultural assimilation for his family. With the help of his father (Laurence Fishburne in a recurring role), Dre begins to try to create a sense of ethnic identity for the members of his family that will allow them to honor their heritage. while preparing them for the future.

The series premiered on September 24, 2014, and has been a ratings winner for ABC on Wednesday nights. Currently in its 3rd season, the show has drawn mostly positive reviews, receiving several awards and nominations, including Emmy nominations for Lead Actor and Actress in a Comedy Series, as well as Outstanding Comedy Series, and a TCA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy.

Yara Shahidi, Marcus Scribner, Miles Brown, Marsai Martin, Jeff Meacham, Jenifer Lewis and Peter Mackenzie round out the series regular cast members.

“Afrostream is proud to have the exclusive rights in France to ‘black-ish,’ a series which explores sensitive social issues within a multigenerational family while making you laugh” said Tonjé Bakang, CEO of Afrostream. “Their stories run the gamut of the blunders of the seemingly cool dad with the awkward jokes to tackling the hot-button issues of our time.”

Adds Jean-François Camilleri, Country Manager, The Walt Disney Company France & Benelux, “The availability of ‘black-ish’ on Afrostream, our first deal with this new and innovative service, fits perfectly with Disney France’s strategy of providing the breadth of our content to a wide range of consumers through an equally wide range of distribution channels.”
