Premiering at the SXSW Film Festival, which kicks off today in Austin, TX is “Behind the Curtain: Todrick Hall,” a feature documentary that takes audiences behind the scenes of the entire process of launching Hall’s most ambitious project yet: the full-scale original musical, “Straight Outta Oz.”

From a small town in Texas to big-time show business, viewers are invited to watch the inspiring documentary of grit, perseverance and the redemptive power of art, as you watch Hall struggle to write songs about growing up gay and black in small-town Texas, his difficult relationship with his mom, and the harsh realities of trying to make it in show business. With limited time and budget, the odds are against him, but Todrick’s passion and his team of talented performers overcome all obstacles to bring this story to the world.

Katherine Fairfax Wright is the director, editor and cinematographer of “Behind the Curtain: Todrick Hall.” She also wore the same hats for another documentary also covered on this blog, “Call Me Kuchu,” which chronicled the story of the last year in the life of the first openly gay man in Uganda. In addition, Wright also produced Malik Vitthal’s feature directorial debut “Imperial Dreams,” starring John Boyega, which was also covered on S&A and is now streaming on Netflix.

“Behind the Curtain: Todrick Hall” is making its world premiere at SXSW, first screening tomorrow, March 11, with additional screenings on March 14 and 15.
