Chicago teen Laquan McDonald’s death will be the center of Showtime Documentary Films’ latest feature 16 Shots, airing June 14 at 9 p.m. ET.

The film comes from Academy Award-nominated director Richard Rowley and focuses on McDonald’s murder at the hands of Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke and the ensuing cover-up. According to the official description: “After police initially declared the shooting as justified, journalists and activists fought for footage of the event to be released, sending the Chicago Police Department and local Chicago government officials into upheaval as the community demanded justice. Rowley’s film dissects the cover-up through first-hand witness accounts which led to the unprecedented conviction that fractured the political landscape of Chicago.”

Vinnie Malhotra, Executive Vice President, Nonfiction Programming, Showtime Networks Inc., said 16 Shots will be a film that delivers a thorough look at the McDonald case.

“The shooting of Laquan McDonald tore up Chicago in ways the city is still processing today,” said Malhotra, “With 16 Shots, Rick Rowley and his team deliver an unflinching and deep look at one of the most notorious police shootings in our history.”

The film is a collaborative effort between Midnight Productions, Topic Studios, Impact Partners and Chicago Media Project. The film’s executive producers include Jacqueline Soohen, Michael Bloom, Lisa Leingang, Dan Cogan, Jenny Raskin, Geralyn White Dreyfous, Ken Nolan and Brian Kenney.

Rowley’s work includes Dirty Wars, for which he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, and is a Sundance Film Festival winning cinematographer on his projects, including docu-series America Divided and Documenting Hate: Charlottesville.
