Warner Bros. Television has officially opened an investigation into the domestic violence claims against producer-writer Salim Akil. WBTV is the studio for Black Lightning, for which Akil is showrunner and exec produces with his wife, Mara Brock Akil. It is also the home of Love Is __, which both exec produce and Brock Akil is showrunner. The studio will meet with cast and crew at the show, which is filmed in Atlanta. Deadline, which was the first outlet to break the news of the formal investigation, noted that such a move is standard practice in the industry now. The lawsuit against Akil was first reported earlier this week. In the lawsuit, Amber Dixon Brenner alleges that she and Salim Akil had a “physically and sexually abusive relationship” which began 10 years ago. The documents give very graphic details, where Brenner alleges numerous graphic occasions of abuse at the hands of Akil, including slapping, strangling and forced oral sex. Brenner claims that Akil once asked her to follow him into the bathroom at a birthday party where he slapped her, forced her to perform oral sex and urinated in her mouth.
