Despite an exorbitant amount of press documenting its groundbreaking technology, Gemini Man is being regarded as both a critical and commercial failure. In fact, it now likely stands to become Will Smith's biggest box office flop since 1999's Wild Wild West. Gemini Man had an opening weekend gross of around $20 million, despite its budget being about $150 million and the fact that it was screened at both IMAX cinemas and in 3D, both of which require higher costs of tickets.

The Ang Lee-directed film, which sees Smith portray a government assassin who goes toe to toe against a clone of his younger self, will join 2013's After Earth and Wild Wild West as one of the few flops in Smith's illustrious career as a blockbuster titan, and even both of those films had bigger opening weekends than Gemini Man. After Earth went on to gross only $248 million at the international box office, while Wild Wild West would gross $222.1 million.

Gemini Man is the lowest opening weekend overall for Smith since Bad Boys in 1995, which proved to be a sleeper hit and went on to be one of his most classic films and roles, producing two sequels (one of which is set for release in 2020).
