With acclaimed performances in Moonlight and Hidden Figures, the “highly melanated” singer and actress Janelle Monae is embodying all the traits of the 21st century Renaissance woman. On November 19, Universal Pictures announced it has signed a first look production deal with Monae’s production company, Wondaland Pictures, the film division of her entertainment company, Wondaland.

Under this pact, both Wondaland and Universal Pictures will develop content spanning various genres, amplifying marginalized voices and underrepresented perspectives.

“There is an exciting, artistic revolution taking place in our industry, and Janelle and the talented team at Wondaland are at the forefront,” said Donna Langley, chairman of Universal Pictures. “Their forward-thinking, inclusive approach to content and storytelling make them a perfect fit for our studio.” Monae is slated to appear in the Universal Pictures drama Welcome To Marwen, as well as the upcoming Harriet Tubman biopic Harriet and a live action remake of the 1955 film Lady and The Tramp.

With this announcement, could a film adaptation based on Monae’s concept album The Archandroid, be on the horizon? For those unfamiliar, The Archandroid is Monae’s debut album, as well as the second and third part her Metropolis concept series. The Fritz Lang-inspired album chronicles the tale of Cindi Mayweather, a time traveling messianic android.
