null This is the 30th time Egypt has submitted a film for Best Foreign Language Film Oscar consideration. Although an Egyptian film has never made the Academy’s short list in that specific category.

This year the country’s official selection is "Factory Girl," directed by Mohammed Khan – a film that made its world premiere at the Dubai International Film Festival last December, and has been praised by critics wherever it’s screened, especially the film’s lead actress Yasmin Raeis.

The drama follows a young "factory girl," named Hiyam, who falls in love with her supervisor, hoping that their love for each other can break their class division.

Released across the Middle East in April, the film is one of the few local independent films to find success at the box office earning over $250,000 in the region.

Last year, Egypt has submitted Ibrahim El Batout’s lauded drama "Winter of Discontent," as its official entry for Best Foreign Language Film Oscar consideration. While it didn’t make the short list in its category, the country received its first ever Oscar nomination for Jehane Noujaim’s feature documentary, "The Square," in the Best Documentary category. Although the Oscar went to "20 Feet From Stardom."

We’ll find out whether "Factory Girl" will make the Academy’s short list, when final nominations are announced on January 15th, 2015.
