The story of Doris Payne is coming to the big screen.

Tessa Thompson has been cast to play the notorious jewelry thief.

The untitled project is coming from Codeblack Films.

Thompson confirmed the news on Twitter. “After chasing Doris and her story for years— and then keeping this secret for awhile— I’m screaming that this dream is coming true. She is a deeply fascinating woman. So pleased to bring this story to the screen with CodeBlack & Lionsgate. Beyond grateful.”

Payne, whose criminal record dates back to the 1950s, continues to make headlines today. She has been arrested many times and has admitted to using 20 aliases, 10 social security numbers and 9 dates of birth.

She was the subject of a 2013 documentary, The Life and Crimes of Doris Payne, which chronicled her early times up to her arrest for stealing a diamond ring from a Macy’s store in 2011. The documentary chronicled that trial and featured her most recent on-camera interview, which was recorded in a prison.

Payne’s most recent arrest was in July 2017.

Variety first broke the news.
