'The Captain' Exclusive Preview: New ESPN Docuseries Chronicles Derek Jeter's Emotional Rise To Baseball Dominance

ESPN‘s upcoming Derek Jeter docuseries The Captain focuses on Jeter’s rise toward MLB success as the captain of the New York Yankees. In the exclusive clip below, Jeter and his father talk about what it was like earlier in his career.

In the clip, Jeter opens up about when he faced extreme doubt about where he was headed in professional baseball. He said that he wanted to quit and go home. His father, Dr. Charles Jeter, said that Jeter’s mother Dorothy was close to letting him come back, but Charles was adamant that Jeter tough it out to achieve his dream.

The Captain will premiere July 18 on ESPN and ESPN+ after the MLB All Star Home Run Derby. Following the July 18 premiere, episodes will debut Thursdays. Episodes two and three will air July 21 and July 28 at 9/8c. Episode 4 will also air July 28, but at 10/9c. Episode 5 will air Aug. 4 at 9/8c. Episode 6 will also air Aug. 4 at 10/9c. The final seventh episode will air Aug. 11 at 10/9c.

The film is directed by Randy Wilkins and features seven episodes recounting Jeter’s life in his, his family, and his teammates’ own words. The series includes interviews with Jeter’s parents as well as his sister Sharlee Jeter, his wife Hannah Jeter, Roger Clemens, Tino Martinez, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada, Willie Randolph, Mariano Rivera, Alex Rodriguez, CC Sabathia, Darryl Strawberry, Joe Torre, Bernie Williams, Fat Joe, Jadakiss, and others.

Wilkins said that he and his team have created a comprehensive portrait of Jeter and his connections to baseball, race, and American life.

“We set out on a journey to discover the man behind the iconic Yankees number 2 jersey,” he said in a statement. “The series gives insight into a hall of fame baseball career, but more importantly, we reveal a person who sits at multiple intersections of American culture. The Captain is a story about race, media, celebrity culture, and the insatiable drive to be the best version of yourself.”
