Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us has gotten its first Emmy award!

Casting director Aisha Coley won a Creative Arts Emmy for her work with DuVernay’s Netflix miniseries. She has been a part of DuVernay’s creative team since the beginning of DuVernay’s film career. Also credited for the win are Billy Hopkins and Ashley Ingram.

DuVernay tweeted about the win, writing, “So happy for this wonderful woman! First nomination. First win. Aisha Coley has won the Emmy for her work in casting WHEN THEY SEE US, along with the great [casting director] Billy Hopkins. Overjoyed!”

Coley’s casting created a cast that now has Emmy nominations, including Jharrel Jerome, Niecy Nash, Michael K. Williams, Asante Blackk and Aunjanue Ellis.
