Maya Lynne Robinson has been cast to play DJ’s (Michael Fishman) wife, Geena Williams-Conner, on ABC’s Roseanne spinoff The Conners.

Robinson will replace Xosha Roquemore, who was in the role last season. The role was originated on Roseanne in the 1996 episode “White Men Can’t Kiss” as a girl DJ didn’t want to kiss because of her race. On The Conners, Geena, a 2nd Lieutenant, has returned home from active duty in Afghanistan.

ABC has released new images of Robinson on set with Fishman and her on-screen daughter, Mary (Jayden Rey), one of which Robinson has tweeted.

ABC has also released episodic images by Eric McCandless from the season’s first episode, “Keep on Truckin’.”

Showrunner Bruce Helford released a statement in ABC’s press release, saying how “thrilled” The Conners team is to welcome Robinson to the show.

“We’re thrilled to welcome the incredibly talented Maya Lynne Robinson to the cast this season. Her character, 2nd Lieutenant Geena Conner, whom a younger DJ was reluctant to kiss in his school play, comes full circle as his wife and Mary’s mother, bringing back a little piece of Conner history. Yet, while Geena is no stranger to the family, viewers old and new will enjoy seeing how her ‘military-style’ discipline meshes with the Conners’ more laid-back attitude,” he said.

The Conners will air on ABC October 16 at 8/7c.
