The Falcon and the Winter Soldier star Erin Kellyman recently chatted with S&A managing editor Trey Mangum about her role as Karli Morgenthau in the series.

Kellyman’s character is part of the Flag Smashers, a group of superpowered anarchists fighting for the world to back to how it was during the Blip. While the group is villainous on the surface, Kellyman hopes that people can see the different sides of Karli in her performance.

On the surface, Karli seems to be an iteration of the Marvel Comics character Karl Morgenthau, who was the leader of the Flag Smashers.

“I think Karli is a complex character, period,” she said. “I think there are a lot of layers to her and I hope that comes across. …She’s very passionate and very driven and she knows what she’s fighting for and she won’t let anyone come between [that and] her.”

Kellyman said that she didn’t start anticipating the wave of fan reaction The Falcon and the Winter Soldier could receive until WandaVision started coming to its conclusion. Seeing the commercials for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier pop up reminded her that the world was still waiting on the series to debut.

“I was nervous,” she said. “I’m still kind of nervous because obviously there’s still a lot of episodes, but I’m excited to see it. I think people are going to be happy.”

We tried to get Kellyman to drop any surprises that the show may have in store for fans, but she was afraid she’d give too much away, saying “That’s hard to do [laughs]. There’s a lot of twists and turns. I think people are going to be shocked in a good way.”
